野々内 保太郎

Nonouchi Yasutaro (1902–1985) was a Nihonga (Japanese-style) painter born in what is now Matsue, Shimane Prefecture, the second son of a farming family. His first art name was Shoun. His sons Nonouchi Yoshiki, Inoue Minoru and Nonouchi Hiroshi also became painters.
After training under Horie Yusei, Omura Taiun and others, he entered the Kyoto City Specialist School of Painting in 1930 and studied under Nakamura Daizaburo. In 1932, still a student, he exhibited at the 13th Teiten (Imperial Art Exhibition) with Miyama no haru (Spring in the Deep Mountains), and changed his art name to Yasutaro. That year he completed the elective course and joined Nishiyama Suisho's Seikosha (private painting school). He later exhibited at the Bunten (Ministry of Education Art Exhibition) and Shin-Bunten (New Ministry of Education Art Exhibition), and after the war at the Nitten (Japan Fine Arts Exhibition) and the Kyoten (Kyoto City Art Exhibition). After Suisho's death in 1958, he co-founded a painting group and studied under Nishiyama Hideo. He became an associate member of the Nitten in 1976. Known for bird-and-flower paintings, he showed large, thickly painted works at the Nitten and produced many finely detailed, brightly colored hanging scrolls. He died in Kyoto.
